Off the Wall Flashblog post

What an awesome idea, the flashblog post. Topic- what is the most off-the-wall lesson you've ever done?

The only thing I can think of is the voicethread I did last year called "What Would the Teacher Say?" in which I showed a step-by-step procedure (mathematical of course) and I asked them to supply the explanatory comments for each step as if they were the teacher. It was a procedure made up of things they already knew about, but applied to a new function. I think I tried to start a new hashtag #wwtts but it didn't take off.

The idea came to me in a flash, I can't even tell you from where. But some kids took me at my word and tried to mimic me, while others went too far into the back ground knowledge and over-explained things. But I'm going to try it again!

  1. Love this idea. I do the "explain what you are thinking" but never "what would the teacher say." May need to try this!

    1. Sorry I'm so late to reply, Shai! Thanks for your comment. Please let me know if you do try it. The kids seemed to have the most fun just imitating me, but hey, whatever works.

  2. I thought I commented last night :( I really like the idea of the #wwtts :) I think it would be interesting to have students teach it as they think I would teach it.

    1. Thanks for persisting Brittany. I've heard that before, people telling me they made a comment and it never showed up, so frustrating. I guess the idea of the #wwtts, for me anyway, was for my students to use things they already knew in a new situation. They knew how to find the inverse of a function, but they had never done it for this particular one. It was one of those things that turned out totally differently than I had anticipated, but it was fun for sure!
